In a shocking display of violence that has ignited outrage across the state, 70-year-old Muslim vegetable vendor Mohammed Mohsin was beaten to death in broad daylight in front of his minor grandson at Kako village market in Bihar’s Jehanabad district.
The incident, which unfolded on Wednesday, September 18, 2025, stemmed from a petty dispute over a Rs 5 shortfall in toll payment, highlighting concerns over lawlessness and possible communal undertones in Bihar’s “Jungle Raj.”
Mohsin, a regular at the local market, had arrived with his young grandson to sell fruits and vegetables. According to Kako police, the accused, Vicky Patel, approached the elderly man demanding Rs 15 as toll. Mohsin, carrying only Rs 10, pleaded for time to pay the balance, explaining that he usually settled the full amount but was short that day.
Enraged by the refusal, Patel grabbed a nearby dumbbell and struck Mohsin repeatedly on the stomach and head, causing instant death. The horrifying assault occurred in full view of the traumatized grandson and passersby.
Eyewitness accounts and reports indicate Mohsin’s body remained on the ground for several hours amid the bustling market, with locals continuing their routines unperturbed, underscoring a disturbing apathy. No immediate intervention was reported, fueling accusations of systemic failure in maintaining public safety.
Police have registered a case under Section 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). However, as of the latest updates, Vicky Patel remains at large, prompting criticism of the authorities’ response.
