Tension prevailed in Santi Bastwada village in Karnataka’s Belagavi district on Monday, May 12, after miscreants allegedly burned copies of the Quran and Hadith. The incident came to light early Monday morning when people who went to the mosque to offer morning prayers found that the Quran and Hadith kept on the ground floor were missing.
Worshippers began searching for the religious books and found them burned at a construction site near the mosque, according to media reports.
Protests erupted in several parts of the city after news of the alleged desecration spread. In the evening, protesters blocked part of the Goa-Belagavi road near Visvesvaraya Technological University.
Belagavi North MLA Asif Sait met the protesters. “Belagavi witnessed no communal clashes after the Congress government came to power. By cooperating with the police, help the government defeat the plans of anti-social elements,” he told the protesters.
