The Dakshina Kannada district police in Karnataka have begun externment proceedings to bar 36 individuals, identified as habitual offenders or repeat perpetrators of anti-social activities within their jurisdiction, from entering specific areas for a designated period, following the recent murders that sparked communal tension in the coastal region.
The police have initiated action to extern 36 individuals, linked to various police station limits including Bantwal, Vittal, Puttur Town and Rural, Kadaba, Sullia, Uppinangady, Punjalkatte, and Belthangady, under Section 55 of the Karnataka Police Act.
The list comprises individuals aged between 22 and 54 from different parts of the district, all of whom have been booked for offences such as assault, intimidation, extortion, and involvement in gang-related activities.
Though the list includes both Hindu and Muslim names, the BJP has raised concerns over alleged bias, with Union Minister of State for Labour and Employment, and Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises, Shobha Karandlaje writing to Police Complaints Authority Chairman Justice N K Sudhindra Rao, claiming that Hindu leaders are being unfairly targeted.
