Speaking at a function on India’s 79th Independence Day Assam chief minister Himanta Biswas Sharma raised the national flag and delivered a speech warning of illegal infiltration and many forms of jihad in the state as greatest threats to the people.
He remarked, “This is not just a political matter, but a battle for our existence. If we are silent, we might lose our identity and land in the next decade. Even the sacred Kamakhya temple hills will also be encroached upon if we do nothing about this.”
Sarma accused the previous governments of ignoring infiltration permitting shifts in population to become established across numerous districts. He asserted that no more compromises will be made by his government and alleged that various forms of jihad including land and love jihad are damaging indigenous control.
“Don’t sell your land to unknown buyers,” Sarma stated, revealing that the government is working to give land rights to indigenous families who do not own land to improve their economic status in the state.
The Minister also condemned the Assamese Nationalist Organisation of “surrendering to infiltrators” and said, “Infiltrators are the biggest problem the state has faced. Our fight against it will inspire others in future.”
Sarma’s speech has been called out by many activists and rights groups for targeting Bengali- speaking Muslims accusing them of infiltration and doing land jihad without valid proofs.
