Police force is still stationed outside Masjid-e-Hussaini in the Sulthanpur area of Balapur after communal tensions flared in Hyderabad’s Old City, where members of a Hindutva outfit associated with the Bharatiya Janata Party staged a demonstration outside a 400-year-old mosque, demanding the closure of a madrasa operating within the mosque premises.
The protest, which took place on August 19, has sparked concern among residents and community leaders who allege that the move is part of a broader campaign to target Muslim religious and educational institutions.
On August 19, protestors gathered in front of the historic Nomani mosque, shouting slogans and accusing the madrasa of conducting “unauthorized” activities and housing “illegal immigrants.”
They raised slogans like “Jai Shree Ram” and “Shut the illegal madrasa.”
Speaking to Maktoob, M. Sudhakar, Inspector, Balapur Police, confirmed that additional forces have been deployed in the area.
“The situation is under control. We are monitoring developments closely to prevent any disturbance to law and order,” he said.
He added, “The right-wing members during the protest claimed that the madrasa is being run illegally, but we are conducting our investigation.”
“We immediately removed the protestors to avoid any untoward incident,” he further said.
