The Jammu and Kashmir government on Friday ordered the takeover of the managing committees of 215 private schools allegedly affiliated with the banned Muslim organisation Jamaat-e-Islami Jammu and Kashmir and its affiliate, Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT).
The order issued by Ram Niwas Sharma, IAS, Secretary to the Government, School Education Department, points out that that the Ministry of Home Affairs had declared Jamaat-e-Islami, Jammu and Kashmir, as an “unlawful association” under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967, through notifications issued in February 2019 and again in February 2024.
Citing inputs from intelligence agencies, the government said, “A number of schools were found to be directly or indirectly affiliated with proscribed organisation Jamaat-e-Islami (JeI)/Falah-e-Aam Trust (FAT).”
It further noted that the “validity of the Managing Committee of 215 such schools has expired/have been reported adversely upon by the Intelligence Agencies.”
In view of this, the administration directed that “the Managing Committee of the 215 schools as given in Annexure ‘A’ shall be taken over by the District Magistrate/Deputy Commissioner concerned, who shall propose a fresh Managing Committee in due course after due verification.”
To ensure students’ education is not disrupted, the order instructed that “appropriate steps in consultation and coordination with the School Education Department shall be taken so that the academic career of the students is not affected in any manner. Quality education as per NEP norms must also be ensured in these schools.”
The schools taken over include 37 in Anantnag, six in Bandipora, and more than 80 in Baramulla.
