Newly recruited Madhya Pradesh police constables undergoing training have been directed to read chapters from the Hindu scripture Bhagavad Gita every evening, a move that has sparked controversy, with the opposition Congress accusing the government of attempting to “radicalise and saffronise” the police force.

Around 4,000 newly recruited Madhya Pradesh police constables undergoing training at eight centres have been directed to read chapters from the Bhagavad Gita every evening during the Hindu month of Margashirsha.

A video of the incident that went viral shows the recruits, dressed in light blue shirts and dark trousers, the standard trainee uniform, reciting verses from the scripture in unison.

Additional Director General of Police (Training) Raja Babu Singh defended the initiative, saying it was meant to help trainee constables lead righteous and disciplined lives.

“It will help the newly recruited strike a balance between intelligence quotient (IQ) and emotional quotient (EQ).At a time when a young student has been killed by on-duty constables in Bhopal, reading chapters from the Bhagavad Gita will certainly have a positive effect on the lives of the new recruits,” Singh told The New Indian Express on Friday.
