Four officers from the Viveknagar police station in Bengaluru, including the station inspector, have come under scrutiny after the death of a 25-year-old Dalit man from Sonnenahalli in Koramangala, who was found dead on Wednesday after allegedly being beaten while in police custody.

The mother of the deceased, Darshan, Adilakshmi, has filed a detailed complaint accusing the police personnel and the Unity Social Service Trust Rehabilitation Centre of illegal custody, assault, and negligence.

According to her complaint, Darshan, who struggled with alcohol dependency, was taken into custody on November 12 following a scuffle near his home, during which he allegedly brandished a machete.

Three days later, Viveknagar police allegedly arranged for his admission to the rehabilitation centre in Adakamaranahalli. She also claimed that officers stopped her from meeting her son and demanded ₹2,500 for his admission, despite her insistence that she could take him to a de-addiction centre herself.

Adilakshmi said officials told her that Darshan was recovering, but on Wednesday she received a call saying he had developed breathing problems and had died.

“When we reached the centre, he wasn’t there; we were asked to go to the Nelamangala government hospital, where doctors told us he was brought dead,” she said, adding that his body bore injuries on the chest, back, arms, and legs.
