A 31-year-old migrant worker from Chhattisgarh was beaten to death by a group of local residents near Walayar in Kerala’s Palakkad district, reportedly after he was labelled a thief and questioned by the attackers, “are you a Bangladeshi?”, as seen in a video of the assault.
The victim, Ramnarayan Bhayar, a native of Bilaspur district in Chhattisgarh, was living in Kanjikode and was attacked on Wednesday evening at Attappallam East.
Police said he was assaulted by a group with the intent to cause serious harm and sustained multiple injuries. He was rushed by ambulance to the Palakkad District Government Hospital in critical condition, where he succumbed to his injuries later that night.
Local residents claimed that the incident occurred around 3 pm after Bhayar allegedly entered several houses in the area in an attempt to commit burglary. They said he was injured during an altercation and was later taken to hospital by the police around 4.30 pm.
However, the victim’s family said that he was innocent, had no criminal record, and that no stolen or theft-related items were found in his possession, contrary to the claims made by the attackers, Asianet News reported.
