A 71-year-old Muslim man died after he was allegedly assaulted by a group of BJP supporters in West Bengal’s Hooghly district over allegations that he was a Trinamool Congress supporter.

His family, however, denied any association with the party and alleged that he was murdered by BJP supporters.

The incident took place on Monday, June 15, in Kelepara village under Purshura in Hooghly district.

The deceased, Sheikh Shah Alam, was taken to Arambagh Medical College and Hospital following the alleged assault, where doctors declared him dead.

According to family members and local residents, a group of BJP workers allegedly gathered outside Alam’s house on Monday afternoon and called him out.

Alam, who was at home at the time, came outside after hearing the commotion.

His family alleges that as soon as he stepped out, he was surrounded and assaulted by 7–8 BJP workers.

They claim the attackers beat him with bamboo sticks, bricks, and iron rods.

When Alam’s wife, Marjina Begum, and other women in the family attempted to intervene, they were also allegedly assaulted.

The family said Alam collapsed after sustaining severe injuries and was rushed to Arambagh Medical College, where he was pronounced dead.

The death has triggered outrage in the area, with family members demanding the arrest of those responsible.
