A village panchayat publicly humiliated a man and his wife by garlanding them with shoes, accusing them of converting to Christianity based on rumours reportedly spread by the man’s father and brother over a land dispute. Police arrested the victim’s brother and stated that false claims of religious conversion had been made to deny the victim his share of the property.
