Prominent Kashmiri human rights activist Khurram Parvez and journalist Irfan Mehraj walked out of Delhi’s Tihar Jail on Wednesday after spending years in prison on charges of financing “terrorism”, though both remain under stringent court-imposed restrictions.
Parvez, programme coordinator of the Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS), was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) from his Srinagar residence in 2021. Mehraj, a freelance journalist who also worked as a researcher with the rights group, was arrested in 2023.
The NIA has accused the two of using the JKCCS to finance militant-linked activities and promote a separatist agenda. Both Parvez and Mehraj have denied the allegations.
Family members were outside Tihar Jail to receive them upon their release.
