A legal dispute has emerged in the United Kingdom over the proposed sale of a 40-year-old temple and community centre in Peterborough to a Muslim organisation.
The controversy centres on the New England Complex, which houses a temple run by the Bharat Hindu Samaj and serves as a religious and cultural hub for thousands of Hindus in the city. Peterborough City Council decided to sell the property to the United Kingdom Islamic Mission following an auction.
Opposing the decision, Bharat Hindu Samaj has approached the High Court, alleging that the council failed to properly consider the temple’s long-standing religious and community role before approving the sale.
High Court Reviewing Decision-Making Process
According to the Hindu organisation, the council overlooked the temple’s nearly 40-year history as a place of worship and community gathering. It has also alleged serious flaws in the way the auction bids were assessed.
In February 2026, the High Court granted an interim order preventing the council from completing the sale while the matter is under judicial review.
