The Karnataka High Court on Monday stayed the deportation of a man detained as an alleged Bangladeshi national after he claimed he is an Indian citizen by birth and had been wrongly identified.

Justice Suraj Govindaraj, hearing a petition filed by Abdul Rahim, directed the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Bengaluru, to verify his identity and determine whether he is the same individual whose conviction in a foreigner case is currently under challenge before the Allahabad High Court.

Restraining the authorities from deporting Rahim until the next hearing on July 14, the Court observed, “FRRO is directed to secure instructions about another proceeding stated to be pending in the Allahabad High Court, and whether the proceedings in that matter and the impugned order relating to the present matter are related to the very same person.”

Rahim, in his petition, said he was born on April 14, 1979, in New Seemapuri, Delhi, and has lived, worked and carried on business in India throughout his life.

He moved in 2014 from Delhi to Bengaluru, where he runs a waste management business through a government-registered proprietorship. He also holds a Goods and Services Tax registration certificate issued under the Karnataka Goods and Services Tax Act

According to the petition, he was detained by Parappana Agrahara police on March 5 during a drive targeting alleged undocumented Bangladeshi immigrants and was subsequently handed over to the FRRO.

The same day, the FRRO issued an order under the Foreigners Act, 2025, directing him to remain at the Utile Foundation detention centre in Bengaluru while treating him as a Bangladeshi national identified as “Md. Rahim Howladar, son of Md. Motaleb Howladar.”
