On July 14, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), accompanied by BJP leader Kirit Somaiya and his supporters, begun demolishing Tehzeeb Islamic English School in Mumbai’s Govandi, which serves around 600 students from marginalised families, following Somaiya branding the institution as “school jihad”.

However, the Bombay High Court later granted temporary protection from further demolition, directing the BMC not to proceed with any additional demolition until the next hearing.

In a series of posts on X before the demolition, Somaiya repeatedly referred to the school as an “unauthorised madrasa” and claimed it was an example of “school jihad”.

Announcing the civic action, he wrote that the demolition of the “illegal” four-storey building had begun with the assistance of the Mumbai Police. He also claimed to have filed complaints against 65 allegedly unauthorised schools in Govandi and said FIRs had been registered in connection with them.

The demolition was carried out by the BMC, which said the school building was unauthorised and that the action formed part of its drive against illegal school structures across Mumbai.

Mumbai Police personnel were deployed during the operation, while Somaiya remained present at the site with his supporters.
