The BJP’s newly appointed social media team has come under scrutiny over old posts praising Gandhi’s assassin, Nathuram Godse, containing Islamophobic and genocidal remarks, and using misogynistic language against women, prompting critics to say that “being abusive is a primary qualification for BJP IT cell.”
The criticism following the resurfacing of their old posts prompted some of the newly appointed members to delete earlier posts, make their accounts private, or deactivate their X accounts, making the posts inaccessible to the public.
The scrutiny follows the BJP’s decision on Monday to overhaul its social media team, replacing Amit Malviya, who had headed the party’s social media operations for more than a decade, with Chhattisgarh leader Deepak Mhaskey as its new social media convener.
During his more than decade-long tenure, Amit Malviya became a controversial figure in the party’s digital propaganda machinery, with critics accusing him of spreading disinformation and producing narratives targeting muslims and opposition leaders that were then circulated widely through the party’s online networks.
The party also appointed four social media co-conveners, Priti Gandhi, Shivanand Dwivedi, Alok Bhatt and Arun Yadav.
Mhaskey, a Chhattisgarh-based party leader, has several years of experience in the BJP’s IT and social media operations and has worked on the party’s digital campaigns in Bihar, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal.
