A Muslim man in West Bengal’s Bankura district died after sustaining critical injuries in an alleged attack by Bharatiya Janata Party workers, the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) said on Saturday. The deceased was the father of one of the organisation’s volunteers.
The man died from his injuries during India’s 80th Independence Day weekend, following the alleged attack in Karisunda village in the district’s Indus block.
CJP alleged that police refused to register a complaint when its volunteer and the son of the deceased, Shaik Abdul Hafeez, approached them.
Police told the media that they had not yet received a complaint regarding the incident, Scroll reported.
In a video posted on social media on Thursday, Hafeez said he had visited a primary school in Karisunda to conduct a survey as part of CJP’s nationwide campaign to improve government schools in villages.
Hafeez alleged that BJP workers arrived at his home later that day and assaulted him and his family.
According to a statement by CJP, the assailants demanded that Hafeez record a video apologising for highlighting the school’s condition and claim that he had acted under “external influence”.
