NEW DELHI — A Muslim bag seller in Uttar Pradesh’s Varanasi was targeted and verbally abused by a Hindu man over his religion while selling bags along the banks of the Ganges.
The man, identified as Mohammad Saddam, was allegedly accosted by a man identified as Rahul Dubey. During the confrontation, Saddam was forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram” and subjected to abusive remarks over his religious identity.
A video of the incident has gone viral on social media. In the video, Dubey can be heard forcing the Muslim man to chant “Jai Shri Ram” while asking him to shut his business and leave the area.
Dubey can further be heard saying, “A Hindu is a Kafir; why are you selling goods here to Kafirs? Leave this place right now.”
The incident has raised concerns over the use of religious identity as a basis for intimidating and harassing people engaged in earning a livelihood.
