AHMEDABAD — Gujarat Police have come under sharp scrutiny after personnel publicly thrashed a Muslim man accused of fatally assaulting his live-in partner during a crime scene reconstruction at a bus stand in Bhavnagar city on Saturday.
The accused, identified as Faizal Lakhani, was tied with ropes and beaten with lathis at the same spot where the alleged murder took place. A video of the incident, showing Lakhani crying in pain and begging for mercy while being dragged around, has gone viral on social media.
Officials have defended the action as a necessary response to the brutality of the crime and to restore public faith in policing.
According to police, Lakhani and the victim, Kajal Baraiya, had been living together on a footpath in Bhavnagar for nearly seven years. Police said Lakhani has a history of criminal cases, including robbery and other serious offences.
After his recent release from jail, Lakhani allegedly discovered that Baraiya was in a relationship with his acquaintance, Ravi. This led to a confrontation on Thursday at the central bus stand, where Lakhani allegedly assaulted both Kajal and Ravi in full public view.
Kajal was admitted to Sir T Hospital in Bhavnagar with grievous injuries and succumbed during treatment. Lakhani was arrested on Friday on charges of murder.
