Municipal corporation authorities in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain district partially demolished Medina Masjid on Tuesday, September 1, as part of the KD Gate road-widening project. Visuals showed heavy machinery and JCB bulldozers removing sections of the nearly 150-year-old mosque.
Additional Municipal Commissioner (Simhastha) Santosh Tagore stated that the structure fell within the reserved road-widening area and that the work proceeded through mutual coordination.
Jamiatul Quraish Qassaban Masjid on KD Road also underwent partial demolition during the operation. As work began, members of the Muslim community protested, leading to heated exchanges with police.
Security personnel were deployed to maintain order. Representatives from both mosques voiced their concerns to officials, yet the demolition continued. Municipal staff, employees and police remained present throughout.
Medina Masjid committee member Shahid Khan noted that the site has stood for 100 to 150 years and that community members had already surrendered portions of their shops to support the project.
Ujjain Shahar Qazi Khaliq-ur-Rahman said the matter would be taken up in a forthcoming meeting with the administration. Local reports indicate the KD Road widening is expected to proceed as part of preparations for Ujjain’s Simhastha Mela in 2028.
