Cachar College in Assam’s Silchar is planning to implement a uniform code following objections and a hate campaign against Muslim female students wearing hijab, as well as an alleged attack on them by ABVP members that led to clashes on Tuesday.
The clash took place during membership drives conducted by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI). According to sources, an argument began after some ABVP members objected to Muslim students wearing hijab at the NSUI camp. It later escalated into a physical altercation, leaving several students injured.
Speaking to local media, a Muslim female student alleged that ABVP members initially told them that Cachar College was an educational institution where religion had no place, but then began chanting “Jai Shri Ram,” the Hindutva war cry.
“They said, ‘You are wearing a hijab today, tomorrow you will start praying here.’ When pooja is held here, we never question why it is happening. Then why are they questioning our hijab?” she asked.
The student said ABVP members had also spread a false claim that students were wearing headphones under their hijabs.
“If that is the case, they can put mechanisms in place to check students before examinations,” she said.
She claimed that the NSUI membership campaign had been conducted with the permission of the college principal.
According to her, on the second day of the campaign, ABVP members objected to their presence at the camp and asked them to leave.
