At a public dialogue conference, BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay delivered an anti-Muslim and anti-Christian speech. He peddled the anti-Muslim conspiracy theories of “love jihad,” “land jihad,” and demographic imbalance, alleging that religious conversions, illegal immigration (“ghuspaith”), and population growth among Muslims were driving demographic change. He termed religious conversion a threat to India’s national security, describing it as organised crime, an act of “waging war,” and a greater threat than terrorism. He also alleged that Waqf Boards, churches, and missionaries were occupying and encroaching on land by constructing mazars, dargahs, and graveyards. He further demanded that either the term “secular” be removed and India declared a “Hindu Rashtra”, or the distinction between “majority” and “minority” be abolished. He also argued that, following Partition on the basis of religion, there should be no religion-based commissions or ministries, and called for the closure of madrasas as well as convent and Montessori schools.
