A 68-year-old man was killed, and several others were injured in Uttar Pradesh’s Barabanki district after a land dispute allegedly escalated into a violent attack in Pure Guman Majre of Kolwa village, under Subeha police station in Haidergarh, on August 16.
The deceased, Shamsher Ali, was allegedly run over by a tractor during the clash. His son Mushtaq Ali, who is the complainant in the case, told police that a group of ‘Thakur men’ attacked villagers with sticks and then drove a tractor over several people when they intervened.
According to the First Information Report (FIR), the confrontation began when Roshan alias Shiv Singh, son of Vikramajit Singh, allegedly started opening a door in front of the house of Mushtaq’s brother Usman Ali using a tractor.
When Shamsher’s family objected, Roshan and Gulshan Singh, along with several others, allegedly began assaulting him.
The FIR names several accused, including Roshan alias Shiv Singh, Gulshan Singh, Shyamjeet Singh, Suraj Singh, Prithviraj Singh, Vikramajit Singh, Sandeep Singh, Mohit Singh and Kallu Singh, besides unidentified persons.
The complaint states that when family members and others arrived to intervene, they were allegedly attacked with lathis and sticks.
It further alleges that the accused drove the tractor over Shamsher Ali, Rasheed, Sajidul and Badruddin, allegedly with the intention of killing them.
Out of all those severely injured, Shamsher Ali succumbed to his injuries, while the others were taken to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Haidergarh for treatment, the FIR says.
