The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has directed the authorities managing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) to disconnect the water supply to a mosque adjoining Terminal 2, following a campaign by BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya targeting the structure.
The notice comes days after the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) declared the mosque an “illegal” religious structure and asked the airport authorities to remove it.
In a notice to the airport’s executive engineer, the BMC said the authorities must either submit approval for the mosque’s water connection to the civic body or disconnect the supply within seven days. Failure to do so, it said, could invite further action under the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act.
The action follows a September 8 complaint by BJP leader and former MP Kirit Somaiya seeking the removal of the mosque near Terminal 2. Somaiya alleged that the mosque was operating at the airport’s international terminal taxi stand without the required permissions.
He alleged that Mohammad Sarwar (an associate officer in MIAL’s cargo division) and another official, N. R. Sriniwasan, were involved in illegal land grabbing and constructing a structure on Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport land.
