Members of a Hindutva group, Bangiyo Hindu Jagaran Manch, on Sunday marched to the Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute in Kolkata, broke police barricades put up in the aftermath of last week’s violence on the campus, and threw stones inside, reported The Telegraph.

The mob also scuffled with the police while trying to enter the campus, reported The Indian Express.

Rohit Shaw, a spokesperson for the Hindutva group, was quoted as saying by The Telegraph that the Bangiyo Hindu Jagaran Manch carried out the march because students of the institute had “disrespected the image of Swami Vivekananda and Bharat Mata” on September 27.

On that day, at least six students were injured after being attacked for objecting to an event organised by members of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh-affiliated consumer group Akhil Bharatiya Grahak Panchayat.

At least one of those injured was hit on the head and another was allegedly attacked with a knife, a student told Scroll.

The RSS, a Hindutva organisation, is the ideological parent of India’s ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

Poorvi Bondre, a member of the union, had told Deutsche Welle that students confronted participants of the event after learning that the organisers were affiliated with the RSS and using the event to “promote its agenda” on campus.

“They called us anti-nationals and Naxals and attacked us with knives,” Bondre had said.
