Delhi Police’s behaviour during protests is yet again under fire, as three journalists have alleged sexual harassment by police personnel while covering a protest at Jantar Mantar on Saturday.
Delhi Police have said they have transferred the journalists’ complaints to the Crime Branch for an “impartial” enquiry.
As videos of protesters being dragged, beaten and violated filled social media, allegations of sexual harassment began circulating. A journalist covering the protest said that Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Vivek Bhagat sexually assaulted her during protests demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The journalist said she was touched inappropriately and pushed while recording the detention of All India Students’ Association (AISA) president Neha Bora.
In a video posted online, the journalist said that she and others then went to a police station to file a case, but the complaint was not registered immediately.
Many videos showed women being manhandled by the police and, in some cases, dragged away to be detained despite showing their press cards.
Delhi Police said they had received the complaints, which had been “transferred to Crime Branch for fair and impartial enquiry”.
