NEW DELHI — A disturbing case of violence against a Muslim Youth has surfaced in Agra’s Tajganj area, raising serious concerns over attacks linked to religious identity, particularly against Muslims. The incident, captured on CCTV and widely shared on social media, shows a young boy being assaulted in a narrow lane after being questioned about his name and religion.

The victim, Anas, a resident of the Kamal Khan locality, said he was on his way to his grandmother’s house when the attack occurred on Tuesday, January 20. In a video statement, Anas said, “I had gone to Tajganj to eat momos near my nani’s house. A man asked my name. When I said Anas, he asked, ‘tum Muslim ho?’ After that, he started beating me with a stick.”

The accused has been identified as Santosh. According to the family, he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. CCTV footage shows Santosh striking Anas repeatedly, while other children in the lane flee in fear. The visuals have triggered outrage, with many describing the incident as a case of hate-driven violence.

Anas sustained injuries in the assault and remains traumatised, family members said. “My nephew did nothing wrong. He was just passing through the lane,” said Fardeen, Anas’s maternal uncle. “He was attacked only because of his religion. This is pure hatred.”

Fardeen claimed that he initially intervened to stop the assault. “I tried to calm the situation and things settled briefly,” he said. “But Santosh returned and attacked me as well. That too is captured on CCTV.”

Police confirmed that the incident occurred within the jurisdiction of the Tajganj police station and said a case was registered on the basis of Fardeen’s complaint. A senior police officer said, “The accused Santosh has been arrested and sent to judicial custody. He was intoxicated at the time of the incident.”

However, the police have denied that the assault had a communal angle. In a statement posted on social media platform X, Agra Police said, “Initial investigation does not confirm that the assault was carried out after asking the victim’s name or religion. People are advised not to spread misleading information.”
