BJP MP from Meerut, Arun Govil

BJP MP from Meerut, Arun Govil, urged the Central Government during Zero Hour in the Lok Sabha to make CCTV surveillance mandatory in mosques and madrasas, stating that the same security standards should apply to every public and religious institution in the country.

He stated that cameras are already widely used in temples, churches, gurudwaras, schools, hospitals and marketplaces, Govil questioned why certain religious spaces remain outside the security network.

He argued that large gatherings take place in mosques and madrasas too, and monitoring them would only help in preventing crime and ensuring public safety.

He said, “It is noteworthy that CCTVs are installed in Saudi Arabia’s Mecca which is the holiest site of Muslims and in madrasas there, due to security concerns. If this system can be adopted there, why is there a hesitation in implementing the same security standards in India?”

Govil also claimed that his demand was not about religion but about national interest. “Security is neither religious nor discriminatory.

Security is always in the interest of the nation and human beings,” he told the House, while calling for a uniform security policy for all places of worship.

The government has not responded to his request yet, but his remarks have triggered discussion on whether his remarks constitute a hate speech aimed at Muslims under the guise of national security.
