Around 100 homes were demolished by the DDA in Taimoor Nagar following the High Court’s order on Monday leaving several families in shock and grief. The court cited that these structures were “encroachments.”
In its judgement on Saturday the court refused to stop the removal of illegal structures around the drain and said that the Friday’s flooding after rain and thunderstorms occurred because the drain couldn’t carry water properly due to those blockages.
This judgement comes after many residents of Maharani Bagh objected before the court that they were facing flooding during the monsoon season due to the “garbage dumping” and “illegal construction on the drain.”
In its statement, the DDA claimed that notices were issued earlier, warning the residents to vacate. However, several families refused to leave.
Following this, at least 14 petitions were filed in court demanding a halt to the demolitions. However, the court rejected the plea.
Some residents of neighbourhood areas have stated in the media that the demolitions, although difficult, were necessary due to overflow of drainage.
The families watched in silence as the authorities demolished homes one after another uncertain of what future holds for them.
