A day after an FIR was lodged against human rights and anti-dam activist Ebo Mili, friends and family allege he has been detained with no information about his whereabouts.
Tensions are rising surrounding the contentious Siang Upper Multipurpose Project (SUMP), with locals demanding the scrapping of the project.
On Monday, Siang Deputy Commissioner P.N. Thungon lodged a formal police complaint against Mili for allegedly violating Section 144 during a protest at Beging village.
The protest, held on May 23, saw the participation of over 400 individuals opposing the construction of the proposed 11,000 MW mega dam.
The protest was spearheaded by Ebo Mili and members of the Siang Indigenous Farmers’ Forum, directly defying a public assembly ban order imposed just a day prior by the district administration.
“With reference to both the letters cited above and in view of stated facts, Shri Ebo Mili has led a mob of 80 to 90 individuals on 22/05/25 at the Beging SUMP site, and protestors under the banner of SIFF (Siang Indigenous Farmers Forum), approximately numbering 400, also assembled on 23/05/25, thereby clearly violating the prohibitory order issued vide No. SD/JUD-11(2)2022-23/VOL-1/532-05 dated Boleng, the 22nd May 2025,” the complaint read.
The letter also directed the officials to take “necessary action as per appropriate sections of law.”
The state government had earlier deployed armed forces to assist technical teams in carrying out pre-construction studies at the dam site.
