BHARUCH — A fresh controversy has emerged around the historic Jama Masjid in Bharuch in Gujarat after a religious organisation claimed that ancient Hindu and Jain idols and artefacts are present within the premises of the monument and require immediate protection and conservation.
The development has prompted the local administration to strengthen security arrangements around the mosque and other sensitive areas of the city to prevent any untoward incidents.
The claims have been made by an organisation called the Shri Chakradhar Swami Janmasthal National Heritage Protection Committee, which alleges that several ancient relics associated with Hindu and Jain traditions exist within the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI)-protected structure.
According to the organisation, these artefacts are not being properly preserved and could suffer damage if adequate conservation measures are not undertaken. The group further claims that the site is linked to the birthplace of Chakradhar Swami, the founder of the Mahanubhav sect, and also has historical significance for the Jain community.
The organisation has announced a public gathering and said that a memorandum will be submitted to the district administration demanding protection and preservation of the alleged relics. Organisers claim that thousands of people could participate in the programme.
Following the announcement, authorities increased surveillance around the mosque and other sensitive locations in Bharuch. Police officials are monitoring the situation closely and have appealed for peace.
Swami Mukteshwaranand, who is leading the campaign, said the organisation possesses a video that was allegedly recorded in the presence of ASI officials.
