Tension gripped the Bankeganj town area under Mailani police station limits on Tuesday evening after a dispute over the installation of a statue of Dr B.R. Ambedkar on government land escalated into violent clashes between two groups. According to officials, the situation worsened when one group attempted to install the statue, prompting opposition from another group, which quickly escalated into unrest.

The confrontation intensified as a mob gathered and became agitated, leading to stone-pelting and arson.

Videos circulating on social media showed a mob attacking a police vehicle and setting a government van on fire amid the chaos. Despite efforts by police personnel to pacify the crowd, the situation spiralled out of control, forcing authorities to use mild force to disperse the mob.

A heavy police force was immediately deployed to the area to restore order.

Senior officials, including District Magistrate Durga Shakti Nagpal and Senior Superintendent of Police Khyati Garg, rushed to the spot to monitor the situation and oversee control measures.

Additional Superintendent of Police Amit Kumar Rai stated that the dispute stemmed from tensions over the installation of the statue on government land. He added that prompt police action helped bring the situation under control and prevent further escalation.
