A 14-year-old boy was shot dead in Shahdara, East Delhi, after he picked up currency notes tossed during a wedding procession on Saturday night. Police have arrested the accused, identified as Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) officer Madan Gopal Tiwari, for allegedly killing the minor, Saahil.

Tiwari, posted in Kanpur, was in Delhi on leave to attend the marriage of his paternal cousin, the groom. He was detained on Sunday and later arrested following interrogation.

A senior officer involved in the investigation said the accused had “some mental health issues” and often struggled with anger, Indian Express reported.

Saahil, who worked at a local grocery shop, was returning home after his shift when he noticed a wedding procession heading towards a community centre. Several of his neighbourhood friends had already joined the celebrations, so he stopped as well.

As guests began flinging currency notes into the air, the boys rushed to grab a few from the ground. That’s when Saahil was pulled by his collar and assaulted by one of the wedding attendees.

“Some boys panicked and ran home. Saahil stayed back,” his brother-in-law, Tabrez Alam told the newspaper.

Witnesses told the family that when the boy asked what he had done wrong, the man grew furious and shot him in the head.
