The Delhi High Court on Wednesday ordered police protection for Madhya Pradesh journalist Amarkant Singh Chouhan, who was harassed, threatened, and stripped inside a police station in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind earlier this month.
The Bhind Bureau Chief of Swaraj Express news channel, on Wednesday, moved the Delhi High Court seeking protection from the alleged threats to his life from Madhya Pradesh police officials.
He sought relief from the High Court, citing “reasonable threats to his life and personal liberty” as well as that of his family, “particularly at the hands of SP Asit Yadav of Bhind”, after having fled to Delhi.
Advocate Warisha Farasat, representing Amarkant Singh Chouhan, submitted that the journalist was physically assaulted and harassed by the Madhya Pradesh police.
She added that Chouhan fled the state fearing for his life and has filed complaints with the Press Club of India and the NHRC.
While Farasat requested status reports from both Delhi and Madhya Pradesh police, the Court noted that any grievance against the Madhya Pradesh police must be addressed before the jurisdictional High Court.
