Eight people have been arrested after a month-old video showing a 20-year-old Muslim student being stripped, brutally assaulted, and tortured over an alleged interfaith relationship surfaced on social media in Madhya Pradesh’s Seoni district, prompting police to register a case and launch an investigation.
The FIR alleges that Sohel Khan, an Electrician Trade student at Seoni ITI, was abducted from a tea stall on June 7, taken to a nearby field, beaten for nearly two hours with pipes and wires, and had a mixture of chilli powder and salt applied to his injuries while being threatened with death.
Following the viral circulation of the videos on Tuesday, police arrested Piyush Vishwakarma, Lucky Vishwakarma, Manjeet Raikwar, Sukhlal alias Dadu Yadav, Shubh Chaure, Abhishek Uikey, Deepak Dhurve, and Abhay Uikey.
The accused have been booked under Sections 104(3), 296(b), 115(2), 191(2), 191(3), 351(2), and 126(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
According to the FIR reviewed by Maktoob, the assault began when Asmit Mana Thakur and his associates arrived at Chunabhatti Chowk, where Khan was having tea with his friends, Aditya Suple and Abhinay Yadave.
The accused allegedly forced Khan onto a motorcycle, assaulted him on the way, and took him to an isolated field, where more men joined them.
