In a shocking incident, an elderly Muslim hawker was allegedly assaulted, robbed, and subjected to communal slurs in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh district on May 2.
Maqsood Ali, a resident of the Derwa area, was returning home around 4 pm when a man identified as Manoj stopped him in a nearby village. Without any provocation, the accused reportedly began abusing the elderly man, pulled his beard, snatched his skullcap, and beat him with sticks and rods.
According to the victim, Manoj used communal remarks, asking, “What are you doing here?” and telling him to “Go to Pakistan.” He also threatened to break Ali’s face. The attacker allegedly looted around ₹10,000 that Ali had earned from his day’s hawking work.
The victim managed to escape when another person arrived at the spot. He later reached home with serious injuries.
Ali approached the local police and lodged a complaint, but claimed that no action has been taken so far. Expressing deep frustration, the elderly man said, “I am poor. What shall I do? Shall I earn or look after these things?”
The incident has raised concerns over communal tensions and the safety of senior citizens in the region. Authorities are yet to confirm details or make any arrests.
