PATNA — An elderly Muslim man was publicly humiliated by a group of locals in Bihar’s Supaul district after accusing him of transporting beef. The incident has triggered outrage on social media.
According to videos circulating online, the incident occurred on 3 July in Pratapganj in Supaul district. The videos show the elderly man being surrounded by a crowd, harassed and forced to wear a garland made of shoes and slippers.
There was no immediate official statement from the Bihar Police on the incident.
Social media users claimed that the man was stopped on suspicion of carrying beef. No evidence has been made public to substantiate the allegation.
The videos drew widespread condemnation, with many users questioning how mere suspicion could justify such treatment and expressing concern over what they described as growing instances of mob justice.
Several people urged the Bihar Police to conduct a fair investigation and take action against those responsible if the allegations are found to be true. Others appealed to public representatives to intervene and ensure justice for the victim.
Responding to the videos, one X user questioned how those who confronted the elderly man could have determined that he was carrying beef, arguing that the incident reflected a climate in which vigilante groups act with impunity. The post also criticised the role of the police and administration in dealing with such incidents.
“How do these Hindu goons know it’s beef? Even a daily consumer of beef cannot distinguish between beef & mutton. These …. are given free hand by the police and administration. Muslims should teach them properly,” the user wrote.
