Srinagar : Alleging harassment and humiliation during their brief detention in Rajasthan, Kashmiri students enrolled in the B.Sc Nursing programme at a private University have claimed they were forced to clean toilets and drains with their bare hands while lodged in jail after protesting over the recognition status of their course.

The students said the 24-hour ordeal, which occurred during the holy month of Ramadan, has left them traumatised and intensified fears about their academic future as the controversy over the programme’s approval continues to escalate.

Back in 2022, students had taken admission through the Jammu and Kashmir Special Scholarship Scheme (JKSSS) in 2022 monitored by Ministry of Defence, believing the course was fully recognised and would allow them to pursue professional careers in nursing.

For the past 28 days, students enrolled in the B.Sc Nursing programme at Mewar University have been continuously protesting against the university authorities, demanding clarity over the recognition status of their course.

Students claimed that the local administration, including the Sub Divisional Magistrate, Deputy Superintendent of Police, and Tehsildar, had granted them permission to hold the protest. During this period, the protest continued without any confrontation. From 11 February until 9 March, no police action was taken as the students maintained a peaceful demonstration.

However, the situation changed on 9 March when police reportedly used force against the protesting students. Several students were taken into police vehicles and brought to the police station. Later, an FIR was filed against them.
