HYDERABAD — The Hyderabad Police have lodged an FIR against Gosha Mahal MLA T Raja Singh following his sacrilegious remarks on Prophet Muhammad during a recent meeting in Madhya Pradesh. The video of the speech went viral on social media, prompting public outrage.

Singh, who has recently resigned from the BJP citing disagreements with the party leadership, has long been accused of making inflammatory statements targeting Muslims. According to police sources, the FIR was registered on Sunday (5 October) following complaints filed at Shalibanda Police Station a day before. Complainants cited the viral video as evidence of Singh’s offensive comments.

“His statements hurt the sentiments of millions of Indian Muslims,” said one of the complainants. “Such behaviour cannot be tolerated in a society that prides itself on religious tolerance.”

This is not the first time Singh has sparked controversy. A staunch supporter of hardline Hindutva, he has faced multiple legal cases for hate speech and communal incitement. In August 2022, Singh was arrested for making derogatory comments about the Muslim community, although he was later released on bail.

According to official records, Singh has 105 criminal cases against him, including 18 related to communal offences. Many of these cases involve inciting riots, hate speech, or hurting religious sentiments, particularly against Muslims. Notably, past incidents include offensive remarks on Prophet Muhammad, provocative statements on “love jihad,” and comments targeting the Muslim population in various states, including Maharashtra and Rajasthan.

“India’s Muslim community has repeatedly been targeted by inflammatory political rhetoric,” said Islamic scholar Dr Farhan Qureshi. “Leaders like T Raja Singh continue to exploit communal tensions, and it is encouraging that the law is now taking action to protect our faith and our people.”

The new FIR has been registered under IPC sections 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 295A (deliberate insult to religious feelings), as well as relevant provisions of the Information Technology Act. Previous cases against Singh have seen mixed outcomes, with some being dismissed on technical grounds, yet his repeated offensive statements have consistently sparked protests and arrests.

Residents of Gosha Mahal and the wider Hyderabad community have expressed concern over Singh’s continued pattern of hate speech. “We live in fear every time he speaks,” said local resident Ayesha Siddiqui. “Our children learn about respect and peace, yet politicians like him try to provoke divisions.”

The FIR comes amid heightened scrutiny on hate speech in India, with authorities increasingly acting against those targeting minority communities. Analysts note that such legal measures are essential to uphold the constitutional values of secularism and protect religious minorities from intimidation.

“Freedom of speech cannot come at the cost of another community’s dignity and safety,” said civil rights lawyer Imran Ansari. “The law must ensure accountability, especially for public figures who wield influence over society.”

Singh’s latest remarks underline a persistent threat to communal harmony, particularly against Indian Muslims. The Hyderabad Police investigation is ongoing, and citizens and leaders alike are calling for swift justice to prevent further unrest.
