A Class 10 student belonging to the Dalit community, named Prathama, in Gujarat’s Wankaner town was allegedly assaulted and subjected to casteist slurs by his teacher on 26 August 2025.

The incident took place outside the school premises when the 15-year-old student of Gyan Ganga School in Wankaner went out to have lunch after his classes.

The teenager was having his lunch at Statue Chowk, located near the Girls’ School, when he was allegedly assaulted and kicked by teacher and school owner Yogendrasingh Zala in the groin, leaving him dizzy and partially unconscious.

Speaking to Maktoob, the boy said, “I was having my lunch at a stall when Yogendra sir called me to the side. While I was trying to learn why he was calling me, he started kicking me.”

Explaining his ordeal, he said, “Sir also said that you are a Valmiki and you don’t have the right to study. You are unworthy of education.”

This year he is appearing for his board exams but due to the incident, he is unable to go to school. However, he expressed the urge to rejoin as soon as possible.

Ever since the incident occurred, the teenager has not attended school.
