Minister for Fisheries and Ports Mankal S. Vaidya has warned that if at all cases of cow theft recurred in Uttara Kannada district in Karnataka, he would order for the accused to be shot at on the road.
The Minister is in-charge of Uttara Kannada district
Speaking to mediapersons in Karwar on February 3, 2025, the Minister said that cases of cow theft were being reported in the district for the last few years, and he had directed the police to take strict action. “They have been told to take stringent action in cases of cow theft,” he said.

He also said that several cases of cow theft were reported in the district during the BJP regime too. However, forgetting those cases, Kumta MLA Dinakar Shetty was criticising the Home Minister in the Congress government. “During their (BJP) rule, there was no action, but now we are taking action,” he said.
Asserting that he will not let such activities to continue in the district, he assured that the administration is taking all necessary measures to protect cows and the interests of those rearing them.
His statement came in the wake of outrage over the slaughtering of a pregnant cow near Honnavar.
“Cow theft has been happening for several years. I have told the SP (Superintendent of Police) that this should stop, and should not happen at any cost. It is wrong. We worship cows. We affectionately rear this animal. We grow up drinking its milk,” Mr. Vaidya said.
