An elderly Muslim man, Zaheer Shaikh, arrested in connection with a case involving the alleged possession of around 500 kg beef, died while undergoing treatment at SVP Hospital after allegations of custodial torture by Vejalpur Police. Family members and their lawyer alleged that he was forced to consume a suspicious drink during interrogation. His wife also accused medical staff of negligence and demanded justice. Officials, however, “claimed” that his health deteriorated after he consumed medication brought by his wife at the police station.
