The administration, on the instructions of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, began what they termed the “largest demolition drive in history” to clear 3,500 bighas of land for Adani Group’s thermal power project. An estimated 2,000 Muslim families were evicted. Residents tried to resist the demolition but were lathi-charged and dispersed.
