Members of Hindu Jagran Manch, led by Tanke Deka, raised slogans of ‘Lungi hatao, desh bachao’ (Remove lungis, save the country) in protest against a ‘Sammanoy Xobhayatra’ (Harmony Rally) organized by the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU). The rally was intended to showcase the city’s cultural and religious diversity, with participants from various religions and communities taking part—an initiative that Hindu nationalist groups objected to. They also raised the slogan ‘Jai Shri Ram’ to counter the procession as it passed by.
