Khairul Islam, a former government school teacher from Assam, alleged that India’s Border Security Force forcibly deported him and 13 others across the Bangladesh border. Declared a foreigner by a tribunal in 2016 despite being born and raised in Assam, Islam said he was picked up from the Matia detention centre and pushed into Bangladesh against his will—while his case remains pending in the Supreme Court. He said his hands were tied, he was beaten, and treated like a criminal. His wife, devastated by a video from Bangladesh confirming his identity, condemned the deportation. Islam asserted that he is an Indian citizen who has been unjustly targeted.
