Participants in the Hanuman Mala Sankeerthana Yatra, organised by the Hindu Jagran Vedike (HJV), attempted to storm the Jama Masjid when the rally halted in front of it to perform keertan. They had been asserting that the mosque was built after demolishing a Hanuman temple and were demanding custody of the site to construct a new temple. Police intervened and prevented them from entering the mosque premises.
