Four Bengali Muslims, including a mother with two children, who were arbitrarily deported to Bangladesh after being detained in New Delhi last year, were brought back to India on Wednesday following a petition in the Supreme Court.

In May, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta submitted to the Supreme Court that the Government of India would bring back persons deported to Bangladesh and verify their claims of Indian citizenship.

The case concerns two families from West Bengal’s Birbhum district who had been living in Delhi’s Rohini before being detained by Delhi Police in June last year on suspicion of being Bangladeshi nationals and allegedly pushed into Bangladesh.

Among them were Sunali Khatun, her husband, Danish Sheikh, their son, and another woman, Sweety Bibi (32), along with her two children, aged 16 and six. 

Sunali Khatun, who was in her third trimester at the time, and her child were brought back in December last year following the Supreme Court direction.

Sweety Bibi (32), along with her two children, aged 16 and six and Sunali’s husband, Danish Sheikh, were brought back on Wednesday. 

Rajya Sabha MP Samirul Islam shared the news about the returnees on social media, stating that the “long-awaited dream of poor illegal deportees of  Birbhum has finally come true”.

The former chairman of West Bengal Migrant Labourers Welfare Board have been vocal about the arbitrary deportation of Bengali Muslim migrants from BJP-ruled states in India and helped the families in their legal struggles.
