Several students of Jamia Millia Islamia have been issued show-cause notices by the university administration for participating in protests held on December 15 to commemorate the police crackdown during the 2019 demonstrations against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), which protesters have termed unconstitutional.
The notices, issued days after the protest, seek explanations from the students for allegedly violating university rules by taking part in an “unauthorised gathering” on the campus.
The December 15 protest marked the anniversary of the brutal police action on students at Jamia in 2019, when Delhi Police entered the university campus during anti-CAA demonstrations, triggering widespread outrage and nationwide protests.
The 2019 crackdown left several students injured, with at least one student losing his eyesight permanently.
Students who participated in the commemoration said the gathering was peaceful and was intended to remember the events of 2019 and reiterate opposition to the CAA, which they argue discriminates on religious grounds and violates the Constitution.
They alleged that the issuance of show-cause notices amounts to intimidation and an attempt to suppress dissent on the campus.
