The University of Jammu has constituted a high-level committee to examine its postgraduate Political Science syllabus after the inclusion of a chapter on Muhammad Ali Jinnah triggered ABVP protests on campus.

The revised syllabus, introduced as part of reforms aligned with the National Education Policy 2020 for the 2026–2028 academic sessions, places Jinnah under the unit “Minorities and the Nation” in the Modern Indian Political Thought module. Earlier, Jinnah was primarily discussed in the context of the two-nation theory and Partition. The new framing, which presents him alongside figures such as Sir Syed Ahmed Khan, sparked objections from Hindu right wing student group.

According to an order issued by the Dean of Academic Affairs, the committee has been tasked with “thoroughly reviewing the issue and submitting its report at the earliest.”

The panel will be headed by Professor Naresh Padha of the Physics Department and will include the heads of the departments of Philosophy, History, and Sociology, along with the Director of the Department of Strategic and Regional Studies. The Assistant Registrar (Academic Affairs) will serve as the member secretary.

The move follows directions from Vice Chancellor Umesh Rai amid growing protests and media attention.

On March 20, activists from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) staged a protest on campus demanding the immediate withdrawal of the chapter.
