The Karnataka Police has suspended an inspector for issuing a notice to a Hindutva leader under the Karnataka Hate Speech and Hate Crimes (Prevention and Control) Bill, 2025, even though the legislation has not yet come into force.
The Bill, passed by the state legislature during the Winter Session in December 2025, is currently awaiting the Governor’s assent.
The issue came to light after BJP MLA V. Sunil Kumar raised it in the state Assembly, alleging that a police inspector from the Tarikere region in Chikkamagaluru district served a notice to Hindu right-wing leader Vikas Puttur ahead of a public event, citing provisions of the proposed law.
Kumar argued that since the Bill had not received approval from the Governor, it could not be enforced.
Police sources said the inspector, Ramachandra N, issued the notice under the mistaken belief that the Bill had become law following its passage in the legislature.
He was placed under suspension on Friday over the lapse.
